What is the Best Sommelier of the Americas competition?
This regional competition began in 2004 with the aim of highlighting the continent's leading figures. There are also competitions for Europe and Asia, among others, in which the goal is to find the Best Sommelier from each continent.
Other countries participating included Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador, Uruguay, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Peru, and Chile, among others; due to visa issues, representatives from Cuba and Bolivia were unable to attend.
The representations are usually made up of local winners from each country, but as a requirement they must belong to a sommelier association affiliated with the ASI (Association of Sommellerie Internationale), organizer of the event.
After a demonstration of serenity, the representative of Canada, Joris Gutierrez Garcia, became the Best Sommelier of the Americas 2025 in its seventh edition.
Gutierrez, born in Montreal, works in the restaurant Le Club Chasse et Pêche from the same city, as well as in the importer Agence Pirates, specializing in wines from France.
